Most of the contributions explore the relationship between phonetics and phonology in one or more Romance languages or dialects. The emphasis is both descriptive and theoretical, and although many theoretical approaches are represented, most contributions follow a laboratory phonology approach.<\/p>\n<p>This book is divided into three sections. In Part 1, \u2018Segments and processes\u2019, <strong>No<\/strong><strong>\u00eb<\/strong><strong>l Nguyen<\/strong>, <strong>Sophie\u00a0Wauquier<\/strong>, <strong>Leonardo\u00a0Lancia,<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Betty\u00a0Tuller<\/strong> explore the mechanisms involved in the perception of liaison consonants in French. <strong>Daniel Recasens<\/strong> focuses on coarticulation in Catalan and Spanish vowel-consonant-vowel sequences. Maria-Josep Sol\u00e9 discusses the effect of feature stability on coarticulation in fricative-nasal clusters. <strong>Francisco Torreira<\/strong> provides instrumental evidence that \/s\/ aspiration in Andalusian Spanish results in postaspiration of an immediately following voiceless stop.<\/p>\n<p>In Part 2, \u2018Prosodic structure\u2019, <strong>Llu\u00efsa Astruc-Aguilera<\/strong> and <strong>Francis Nolan<\/strong> examine phrasing and accentuation in various types of extrasentential elements in English and Catalan. <strong>Laura Colantoni<\/strong> and <strong>Jeffrey Steele<\/strong> explore asymmetries in assimilation and dissimilation in stop-liquid clusters in Argentinean and Chilean Spanish as well as in European and Quebec French. <strong>S<\/strong><strong>\u00f3<\/strong><strong>nia Frota<\/strong>, <strong>Mariapaola\u00a0D\u2019Imperio<\/strong>, <strong>Gorka\u00a0Elordieta<\/strong>, <strong>Pilar\u00a0Prieto<\/strong>,\u00a0and<strong> Marina<\/strong> <strong>Vig\u00e1rio<\/strong> examine the phonetic and phonological characteristics of intonational boundaries in five Romance languages. <strong>Marta Ortega-Llebaria<\/strong> and <strong>Pilar Prieto <\/strong>investigate the correlates of stress independent of accent in Barcelona Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>In Part 3, \u2018Acquisition of segmental contrasts and prosody\u2019, <strong>M.\u00a0Jo\u00e3o Freitas<\/strong> explores the acquisition of vowel reduction in European Portuguese. <strong>Ferran Pons<\/strong> and <strong>Laura Bosch<\/strong> consider a number of experiments on infant perception of iambic and trochaic rhythm in Catalan and Spanish. <strong>Geoffrey-Stewart Morrison<\/strong> contributes a tutorial on the application of logistic regression in speech perception research on first and second language learners. In the final paper, <strong>Laurence White<\/strong> and <strong>Sven L. Mattys<\/strong> focus on the best acoustic correlates to account for isochrony-based rhythmic classes (i.e. stress-time vs. syllable-time).<\/p>\n<p>This collection provides a good overview of current research in Romance phonetics and phonology. The papers explore differences and similarities among Romance languages and dialects, and in many occasions, between Romance and other language families (most notably Germanic).
