ISBN <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/acquisition-of-syntax-in-romance-languages\/oclc\/69680198&amp;referer=brief_results\">9789027253019<\/a>. $188 (Hb).<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/umdrive.memphis.edu\/rtgsntos\/\"><strong>Iv\u00e1n Ortega-Santos<\/strong><\/a>, <em>University of Memphis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With an emphasis on Romance languages and the principles and parameters framework, this volume presents a selection of papers from The Romance Turn, a workshop on first and second language acquisition that took place in Madrid in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Section 1 focuses on \u2018Clitics, determiners and pronouns\u2019. <strong>Sergio Baauw<\/strong>, <strong>Marieke Kuipers<\/strong>, <strong>Esther Ruigendijk<\/strong>, and <strong>Fernando Cuetos<\/strong> explore the development of <em>se<\/em>&#8211; and <em>self<\/em>-anaphors in Spanish and Dutch. <strong>Anna<\/strong> <strong>Gavarr\u00f3<\/strong>, <strong>Ana Teresa P\u00e9rez-Leroux<\/strong>, and <strong>Thomas Roeper<\/strong> contrast the acquisition of the bare nouns and definite nouns in English and Catalan. <strong>Isabelle Barri\u00e8re<\/strong> and <strong>Marjorie Perlman Lorch<\/strong> investigate the acquisition of ambiguous valency-marking morphemes in French. The acquisition of object clitics in French and Italian is detailed by <strong>Natascha M\u00fcller<\/strong>, <strong>Katrin Schmitz<\/strong>, <strong>Katja Cantone<\/strong>, and <strong>Tanja Kupisch<\/strong>, and <strong>Maren Pannemann<\/strong> contemplates interference in the first language acquisition of determiner phrases in French-Germanic bilingual children.<\/p>\n<p>In Section 2, \u2018Verbs, auxiliaries and inflections\u2019, <strong>Claudia Caprin<\/strong> and <strong>Maria Teresa Guasti<\/strong> discuss the acquisition the auxiliary <em>be<\/em> in early Italian. <strong>Elisa Franchi <\/strong>looks at patterns of copula omission in Italian. The acquisition of imperatives and the root infinitive hypothesis are discussed by <strong>Manola<\/strong> <strong>Salustri<\/strong> and <strong>Nina<\/strong> <strong>Hyams<\/strong>. Finally, the acquisition of subjects and external arguments are explored by Vincent Torrens, Linda Escobar, and <strong>Kenneth Wexler <\/strong>for Spanish and by <strong>Jacqueline van Kampen<\/strong> for French, Spanish, and Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>Section 3, \u2018Movement and resumptive pronouns\u2019, includes <strong>Elaine<\/strong> <strong>Grolla<\/strong>\u2019s contribution on the acquisition of A- and A\u2019-bound pronouns in Brazilian Portuguese, <strong>Mar\u00eda Junkal<\/strong> <strong>Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong> <strong>Mangado<\/strong>\u2019s exploration of the acquisition of long-distance <em>wh<\/em>-questions in first language Spanish, and <strong>Magda Oiry<\/strong> and <strong>Hamida<\/strong> <strong>Demirdache<\/strong>\u2019s investigation of the acquisition of <em>wh<\/em>-in situ in first language French.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of Section 4 is \u2018Syntax\/discourse interfaces\u2019. <strong>Jo\u00e3o Costa<\/strong> and <strong>Kriszta<\/strong> <strong>Szendr\u00f6i <\/strong>discuss<strong> <\/strong>focus marking in early European Portuguese, and <strong>Manuela Pinto<\/strong> examines the effect of crosslinguistic influence on bilingual first language acquisition.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Section 5 explores \u2018L2 acquisition\u2019. <strong>Claudia Borgonovo<\/strong>, <strong>Joyce Bruhn de Garavito<\/strong>, and <strong>Philippe Pr\u00e9vost<\/strong> discuss English native speakers\u2019 interpretation of determiner phrases signaled by mood in Spanish relative clauses. <strong>Crist\u00f3bal Lozano <\/strong>investigates the second language acquisition of presentational focus by Greek-speaking learners of Spanish. <strong>Silvina A.
