Palatalization and retroflection in early modern Chinese

This paper challenges the traditional Chinese phonologist beliefs and argues that palatalization and retroflection in Early Modern Chinese are two phases of a push-chain sound change instead of two separate events; they are not necessarily conditioned; and they are still happening in Northern Mandarin speaking area today.
