Abstract

In this paper we examine the description of noun classifiers in the Teposcolula variety of Mixtec (Otomanguean; Mexico) in Arte en lengua mixteca by Antonio de los Reyes (d.1603). His 1593 grammar is a valuable source of information about 16th-century Mixtec, which showed little influence from Spanish. Among its innovative features, de los Reyes described the semantic, functional, and diachronic properties of noun classifiers with a detail and accuracy that strikingly anticipates modern typological accounts.
